7 Reasons your child should train BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)

kids bjj

1. Self-Defense

BJJ is a martial art, teaching techniques to defend yourself. Training helps to build the reflexes to deal with dangerous situations. BJJ gives confidence to a child to stand up for themselves and fight back if needed.

2. Self-Confidence

As children develop some skills in BJJ, their confidence gets a big boost. They become more self-assured and confident. The BJJ classes offer encouragement for a child to achieve BJJ goals. This confidence can extend outside of the gym and into all areas of life.

3. Belts and Ranking

Belts and rankings are a public recognition among peers for the student’s effort and progress. BJJ ranking system helps teach children to set goals and achieve them, to work hard and have focus.

4. Discipline

BJJ offers a child discipline from the start to the end. They are able to have fun but at all times they must respect the coach and each other. The classes offer a level of discipline that can help all children to learn. The benefits of learning discipline will apply in all areas of the children’s lives.

5. Weight Control

Childhood obesity is a global epidemic and diabetes is a real problem for children.

BJJ classes include warm-up calisthenics, teaching and practicing of moves as well as some active games.  The workout each child gets will not only assist in the natural development of his or her muscles but also help them build stronger Cardiovascular systems. Even in the most active of team sports such as Basketball or Soccer, children don’t get that much of a workout simply because they generally don’t play the whole game and even if they do, there are still breaks in the action.

6. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu isn’t about brute force, it is about control and technique

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is practiced with the mindset that your opponent can be bigger and stronger than you, but technique can defeat this. The idea is to first master the technique, then develop the power.

7. BJJ is Global

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has experienced a World Wide growth in the past 10 years unlike any other Martial Art. You can find a Jiu Jitsu school in any country in the world.

In BJJ, a student may travel to any school and they will still be practicing the same hip throw, arm lock or choke that are taught in any academy. The community is very large and very open.
